AerWheel
AerWheel™ · Driver Awareness

Is there a human at the wheel?

Redefining driver awareness. AerWheel reads the data from the sensor in the steering wheel to detect driver presence and attention in real time, with no camera and no deliberate input. This implementation of A-Live® is fully resident on the sensor itself and gives actionable information — no CPU or external computation needed.

How it works

The wheel becomes the sensor.

The steering wheel goes beyond data and gives information.

AerWheel deduces human micro-vibrations regardless of all mechanical car noises. It can then ascertain as human presence on a steering-wheel embedded microcontroller, six-axis IMU (STMicroelectronics LSM6DSV16X). It recognizes the unique patterns a real human grip/touch creates — across highway, urban, and low-speed turns. It runs locally on the embedded microcontroller, and gives actionable information directly to the vehicle with no external connectivity required for computation.

Sense

A 240 Hz six-axis IMU captures micro-vibrations from the driver’s grip on the wheel. All extraneous car noises are eliminated.

Classify

Recognizes the human touch with classification updates every 500 ms. This process is performed directly and only on the sensor.

More than a signal: valuable information

The vehicle is told, in real time, whenever needed, whether an engaged human is in control or present. This can be done continuously.

What you get

Awareness without the trade-offs.

  • Real-time monitoring of driver engagement and wheel interaction
  • Detection with industry-leading accuracy (99%+, <0.5% false positives)
  • Compliance with the law — Section 24220 of the IIJA
  • Easy installation in any steering wheel
  • Works across all conditions — highway, urban, and low-speed turns
  • On-device — no camera, no external connectivity (only needs ~35 mA active)

This product was built by a minor modification of an actual Tesla steering wheel — a millimetric slit to lodge the sensor, which costs less than 80 cents. It can give direct information, not just data…
